Broad-Leaved Melnik is one of the Struma Valley’s oldest and most distinctive indigenous grape varieties. Named after the historic town of Melnik, it is native exclusively to the south-western region, with deep roots in the vineyards around General Todorov., A demanding, late-ripening variety, it depends on the valley’s exceptional climate: a warm spring, a long and intensely hot summer, a dry autumn that lingers well into the year, and a relatively mild winter. Here, under the southern sun, Broad-Leaved Melnik reaches its full maturity and expresses the unmistakable character of its native land.

Early Melnik Vine

Early Melnik Vine, also known as Melnik 55, was created from a desire to preserve the distinctive character of the ancient Broad-Leaved Melnik Vine while allowing the grapes to ripen earlier. It is a cross between Broad-Leaved Melnik Vine and pollen from the French varieties Durif and Valdiguié., Today, it remains closely tied to its place of origin, grown almost exclusively around Sandanski and Melnik, including the vineyards near General Todorov. Ripening toward the end of September, it benefits from the long, warm autumn of the Struma Valley, developing generous sugar levels while retaining the depth, spice and regional identity associated with Melnik., It is a modern expression of an old local tradition — shaped by science, but still unmistakably rooted in the valley.
